The Waynesboro Rotary Club has partnered with other community leaders to establish
the Ferst Foundation Childhood Literacy Program in Burke County. The Ferst
Foundation is a public 501(c)3, non-profit with the mission to "provide books for local
communities to prepare all Georgia pre-school children for reading and learning success".
The children at the Early Head Start program will be the first to receive books from the
Ferst Foundation program in Burke County. It is expected that 94 students will benefit
from this literacy program. From birth to age five, these children will receive an age
appropriate book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and a monthly Leap into
Books newsletter containing community resource information along with a book guide
specific to the monthly title mailed to their home. Georgia Power is sponsoring the
first year to kick-off the new literacy program. If your child lives in Burke County they
are eligible for this program and Rotary hopes to help more kids each year. Rotary is
leading the effort but local community leaders will serve on the committee to continue
fundraising for the program.
